 HICKS ISLAND PADDLE Tuesday August 19 5:30 pm - 8 pm A circumnavigation of this remote island boasting remnants of a menhaden fish processing factory dating back to the 18oos and a designated bird sanctuary.
MECOX BAY PADDLE Thursday August 21 5:30 pm - 8 pm Learn about this unique waterbody, Long Island's largest that is periodically open to the ocean, and its diverse wildlife.
ACCABONAC HARBOR TOUR Wednesday August 27 5:30 pm- 8 pm The classic tour of my favorite harbor.
EARLY BIRD SUNRISE PADDLE TO CARTWRIGHT ISLAND Sunday August 10, 2008 5:30 am- 7:30 am PLACE: Barnes Hole Road beach, East Hampton. Weather permitting, we'll paddle the one mile crossing of Gardiners Bay to Cartwright Island, a private bird nesting sanctuary that is off limits to landing. We will circumnavigate this tiny but interesting island before returning, a 3 mile R/T.
CEDAR POINT FULL MOON TOUR Saturday August 16 6 pm - 9 pm Bring a picnic dinner for this paddle along Hedges Bank and around Cedar Point into Northwest Harbor. We'll stop to enjoy the sunset before continuing by the light of the moon.
All trips are led by naturalist Mike Bottini and are suitable for novice paddlers (no first-timers please... participants should have some paddling experience). June Programs
Ocean Beach Walk Thursday, June 12 8am - 10am We'll take a leisurely walk along the ocean beach in Amagansett and discuss some of the unique ecological aspects of this dynamic environment. We'll take a close look at Piping Plovers, and perhaps some newly hatched chicks, Sanderlings, dune and beach vegetation, and anything interesting that might have washed ashore overnight. Fee: $20/person (bring a friend for free). Meet at the end of Atlantic Avenue in Amagansett.
Moonlight Long Pond Paddle Saturday, June 14 7pm - 9pm. This trip is on the Long Pond as in the Long Pond Greenbelt and is sponsored by the Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt. We will paddle to the far end of the pond in daylight, if water levels permit, and return by moonlight, providing the skies are clear. FREE. Rentals available: $30 single kayak; $50 double kayak and canoe.
Walking Dunes Field Trip Tuesday, June 17 9am - 11am My favorite spot! We should see orchids and beach heather in bloom, Fowler Toad tadpoles ready to metamorphose, and perhaps box turtles laying eggs. Meet at the end of Napeague Harbor Road. Accabonac Paddle Saturday, June 21 9 am - 11 am A short morning paddle on the longest day of the year. We will look at Horseshoe Crabs, which have been mating and laying eggs, Osprey nests, the many fish-eating birds that reside or hunt in the harbor, and we'll keep an eye out for Diamondback terrapins. Fee: $20/person (bring a friend for free). Rentals available: $30 single kayak; $50 double kayak and canoe. Meet at the end of Landing Lane.

About Mike:
Mike Bottini is a veteran naturalist, writer, and
environmental consultant. After completing graduate studies in
wildlife ecology at the University
of British Columbia, Mike worked for fourteen years at the
Group for the
South Fork, a non-profit environmental advocacy organization.
He is an award-winning columnist, a former adjunct professor at
Southampton College,
and continues to introduce people to the outdoors through his
field naturalist classes, nature walks, and paddling trips.
